The U.S. 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing had the mission of keeping North Korean MiG 15s from attacking American bombers headed for the supply railways of the North. In this painting a formation of F-86 Sabre Jets scatters a flight of MiGs on their way to intercept F-84 Thunderjets or "Thuds". The MiG 15 was supplied to North Korean and Chinese squadrons by the former Soviet Union. While the USSR denied it during the Cold War, they also supplied veteran pilots to train and support the less experienced North Koreans. American Sabre Jet pilots never knew until engagement whether they were dealing with green North Korean recruits or a veteran Russian ace from WW2. Despite this, F-86 squadrons had a 10 to 1 kill ratio over the enemy in Korea. |
