American B-17 crews making bombing runs over Germany almost hated to see the anti-aircraft 'flak' stop. It usually meant that the German Messerschmitts and Focke Wulfs were on their way. In this painting American P-51 Mustangs drop their wing tanks in preparation for battle with the FW 190s cutting a swath through the bombers. Despite being heavily armed, the "Flying Fortresses" were sitting ducks for the machine guns and cannons of the much faster fighters. The P-51 was America's premiere bomber escort. Many B-17 crews owed their lives to the protection provided by these superb long distance fighters. |
